Twenty American academics and researchers contribute 13 chapters examining how changes in political powers and processes have shaped the country’s education policy, to understand how the USfrom an internationally-envied system in the 1950s to its current weakened state. Topics explored include surprise and incoherence in policy changes over the past decades; lack of consensus on how best to reach world-class school performance; federal involvement in securing equal rights and equal educational opportunities for individuals and groups; the power and limitations of economic, political, and information technology globalization as related to educational policy change; strategies for improving school performance, including integrating mayors into school governance and management, and integrating school systems into broader agencies of holistic child support and development; and likely powers and processes that will influence public education in the coming decades.
